And one of the things I would like to try to accomplish as kind of a side light today is to help convince you that we really, it is important of course that we be present in academia, that’s a place that’s very dear to our hearts. But if that’s the only aim we have for our students, then we will be in deep trouble. Because given the current situation in the world, there is not enough room in the academic world for the students that we feel necessary to have in or endeavors for the research effort to go forth.

So you have to think about the other things that a scientist can do in the world. And I will try to make the case that in fact they can do just about anything. As I’ve said before the PhDs really, needs to be thought about as a degree of opportunity not a degree about limitation where one knows more and more about less and less.
