METRICS IN CONTEXT

The premise of this session is this; the ultimate goal of many programs as you know is to increase the diversity of those in the PhD ranks. That has been translated typically as the number of the under-represented students entering doctoral programs by the end of the programs funding period. No editorial comment. Since [00:09:00] the number remains low relatively speaking, some have questioned the efficacy of the programs themselves, but context matters. Do we need different metrics that better reflect the institutional differences we value while serving both the programs and their students? So if you can keep all of that in mind, it’s a pleasure to turn to my provocative colleague Tony Depass.
